Find Your Pace

"Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability."

~Sam Keen

This quote really resonated with me this week (O.K., I confess, it resonated for this whole past month).  When the weather is hot, it is tough to move.  We slow down.  At first I thought this was a bad thing, but I'm now realizing that hot weather or not, it is often important pace yourself.  There is a rhythm to life and the key is to find the rhythm that suits YOU and suits you at a particular time for particular tasks.

This week:  Take some time to reflect.  Slow down.  Take the time to look at how you pace yourself.  What is your rhythm?  Are you slow and steady?  Fast and driven?  Stopped?  Think back on times in your life that have been the best for you.  What was your rhythm then?  This week experiment with your rhythm.  Try out different paces.  Think of it as a dance you are doing.  When are you moving your best?  Use this information to plan how to move forward at the pace that is best for you.

Right now I would LIKE to be slow but summer or not, I'm racing. I do get that slow summer pace, though, I loved it as a kid - good respite from busy school years. I think a lot about "pacing rather than pushing" and which should be used when.

Thank you for permission to allow life to flow, without forcing things into a specific timeline. Figuring out how to push myself without draining all my energy is something I am dealing with, but I love the idea of treating it more like a calm flowing waters instead of paddling upstream on a raging river.

Thanks Linda. I know what you mean about slowing down a bit, quite deliberately, in the summer. Now that school is starting again this Thursday I am feeling rather frenetic again. Thanks for allowing me time to reflect (and not feel guilty!)

Yes, give yourself time to reflect, Mary Ellen--guilt really isn't very helpful!

Linda, I thought I had read your post for the week! I had not ... I appreciate the encouragement to pace. The encouragement comes in a week where it is validating as well. I blocked Wednesday for 'Jeff Day' and went fly-fishing and on a long bike ride.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Great reminder. Sometimes it hard to "stop and smell the roses."
