Value What You Are

Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.

~Malcolm S. Forbes

For some reason we often place a lot of emphasis on what we are lacking. While some people think that should motivate them to change or to become what they are lacking, it usually doesn't work that way. It is more important to accept and value what you are. After all, you are unique in all the world, and although you may not be quite what you want to be--yet--you cannot become that desired person until you really value who and what you already are.

This week: Spend some time focusing your attention on what you are, as opposed to what you are not. Appreciate yourself. Notice those things that you value about yourself. Treasure your idiosyncracies. If you have trouble doing this, ask a close friend or loved one what they value about you. This allows you to see the value that you bring to others. Understand that you don't have to be perfect to bring value to the world.

Find Passion in Your Career

"If you can't find passion for anything in your business you are in a wrong business - get out now!"

~Adam Urbanski

Life is too short to spend your time and energy working at something for which you feel no passion at all. You owe it to yourself, your customers or clients, and your employer (especially if your employer is you) to bring passion to your business.

This week: Ask yourself: What excites me about what I do for a living? What do I really enjoy about it? What special talent or product do I bring to the world? What do I want the world to know about what I do? How does what I do make a difference, even a small one, in the lives of others? If you are bored and jaded with your career, remember what it was that appealed to you about it in the first place. See if you can reconnect with the passion that you once felt. If not, ask yourself: "What DO I feel passionate about?" It may be time to redesign your career.

Let Your Experiences Transform You

Everything in your life is there as a vehicle for your transformation. Use it!"

~ Ram Dass

All the experiences we have in our lives--whether positive or negative--contribute to our learning of important lessons. Those lessons tell us about ourselves and about others. Those lessons are not about judging ourselves or others, but provide us with a vehicle to transform our lives. When we get the positive learning from any of the experiences in our lives, we are able to let go of negative emotions and limiting beliefs which have sabotaged our success and happiness. The key is beginning to use the learning in all your life's experiences to move you forward and transform your self and your life.

This week: Notice the learning in each of the experiences you have this week, whether they are positive or negative. Ask yourself if those experiences and that learning could bring about opportunities for transformation. What would have to happen for you to be able to transform yourself from that experience. Journal about these experiences and the opportunities for transformation they could/do provide.

Let Go of Phony and Be Yourself

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

~Dr. Suess

In other words, be yourself. Be authentic. When you are being yourself, others know you are authentic. They can accept for who you are, or not. The point is that when you act in an authentic way, people who do accept you are accepting the "real" you, instead of someone you are pretending to be. The problem with pretending is that people can see through the phoniness. Even if they buy your phony routine, ultimately you won't be able to maintain it. The real you will shine through at some point or another. And if someone has believed you to be someone else, they end up feeling betrayed and angry.

This week: Experiment with being yourself. Let your guard down and express your authentic self in at least two different settings. Notice what happens. Do you have more fun? Is there less pressure? How do others accept you? Notice how good it feels when someone accepts you for your "real self."

Linda Pucci, Ph.D. is a psychologist, life coach and expert in helping people reach their goals and overcome the obstacles that block their dreams. Sometimes those obstacles are the ways we sabotage ourselves, pretending to be someone we are not. Change Yourself to Change the World

"Be changed and the world around you begins to change."

~Dr. Gerald Epstein

When you want change in some part of your life, change how you act and react. This works for two reasons. First, it models the change you want to see in the world or those around you. Second, it changes YOUR behavior and attitude, and clears the way for others to change as well.

This week: First, identify a change you'd like to see in some person or area in your life. Next, change your reaction to them. If you have been quietly accepting their bad behavior, change that approach and speak out. If you have been reacting negatively, change your approach to something more positive. Finally, notice what happens. When you change your behavior or attitudes, it opens the door for changes in others. The changes may be small at first, but you can always build on them.
