Use The Power of Your Thoughts and Move Beyond Negativity

"If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought."

~Peace Pilgrim

When we are caught up in negative thinking, we create that negative experience for ourselves.  We end up feeling anger or discouraged or hopless or despairing.   Those negative thoughts become our assessment of our experience and take on a reality before we even realize it.  Our brains try to find what we are thinking about, so if you are thinking about how bad things are, your brain tries to find you more bad things.  That isn't to say that you need to be a Pollyanna to the point of delusion.  There is  a middle ground where you can acknowledge that things are not the way you want them--yet.  At the same time you can hold out the vision of how you would like it to be (expressed as positive thoughts).  When you focus on the outcome you want, you help create the power to make it so.

This week:  Focus on your thoughts.  Notice when your thoughts are negative.  Change the negative thought to something more positive, more in line with what you want you your outcome to be.  Do this all week and notice how it feels.

Change Your Negative Thinking to Change Your Life

"What we think determines what happens to us, so if we want to change our lives, we need to stretch our minds."

~Dr. Wayne Dyer

Many people don't realize that how they think about things helps shape what happens.  They dwell on all the things that could go wrong, they focus on the negatives, and then are dismayed when life keeps giving them lemons.  If you want to change how your life is going, change your thinking.  Focus instead on possibilities, opportunities, and all that is positive.

This week:  Focus on things that are going in the direction you would like.  They don't have to be perfect, just headed in the right direction. Notice when you think negatively, and immediately change that negative to something positive.  It doesn't have to be "pie in the sky" positive, just add words to make it true.  For example, you might change "I never reach the financial goals I set" to "I haven't reached my financial goal yet, but I"m determined to do it."  Give yourself credit for what you have done so far.  Like any muscle, your brain will get stronger as you stretch it.  Focus on what you want to have happen, and what you are doing to make it so.  You are in charge of your life, and can really begin to see that fact when you change your thinking.

Stem Your Stream of Worry Before It Overflows into Your Life

"Worry is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind.  If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained."

~Arthur Somers Roche

When we are worried, we are focused on the wrong thing.  Usually we are focused on the outcome we DON'T want to have happen.  We focus on these negative "what ifs" and help create that outcome by giving so much attention to it.  Our brains try to find us more of the things we think about.  If you are thinking about something, even if you don't want it to happen, your brain helps create it for you.  When you have more and more worry, you create neural pathways for it.  Eventually it impacts your other thoughts and turns you into "worrier" and you overflow your river banks with negative thinking.

This week: Ask yourself, "How much worrying do I do?"  Keep track of all the things you worry about for a full day.  Write them down.  Now assess them carefully.  Are they really things you need to worry about, or are you wasting your time and energy worrying about things that are a) unimportant or b) not likely to happen.  If you discover you have a problem with excessive worry, get some help with it.  There are many techniques and experts who can help you stem your stream of worry so that it no longer overflows into all areas of your life.
