Life Goes On

"In three words I can sum up
everything I've learned about life:
it goes on."

~Robert Frost

Even when we are struggling in our lives, life goes on. Sometimes the best way to handle life's challenges is to put one foot in front of the other and just keep moving through it. Even when we think something has been a disaster, we can recognize that it is the journey--the process of living our lives--that is the most important thing.

This week: Take time to appreciate the movement of life. Take an inventory of where you have been in the past 10, 15, and 20 years. Do you see how you have moved? Can you appreciate how you have changed. Sometimes we don't notice how we have continued to move through the journey of our lives.

Know Your Value

"We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals

that deep inside us is something valuable, worth listening to,

worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch."

~e.e. cummings

We all begin to develop our sense of ourselves in childhood, when parents or others let us know that we are valuable. If you happen to have missed that stage in your development, it is never too late. When we are loved, no matter by whom, we learn that we are valuable, worth listening to, worthy of trust, and sacred. That special, valuable "something" which resides inside of each of us is our SELF, that expression of our soul and reason for being. It is unique. It is valuable. Treasure it!

This week: Be the person who notices that valuable thing in others. Let them know you've noticed their specialness. Show them that they are worth listening to. Give them the gift of love. Appreciate them, not for what they DO, but just for being themselves.

Play Full-Out for Success

"I can't imagine a person becoming a success
who doesn't give this game of life everything he's got."
~Walter Cronkite
When you play at your goals half-heartedly, you get inconsistent or half-hearted results. In order to really be successful, you have to want it fully--your goal needs to be COMPELLING. When you have a compelling goal and play the game of life full out, you can create a life that is full and joyful.
This week: Think about your current goals. Are they compelling? If not, how could you redefine your goal so that you'd want to play full-out? Redefine your goal to make it compelling. Break Overwheming Tasks into Manageable Pieces

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
The secret of getting started is breaking
your complex overwhelming tasks
into small manageable tasks,
and then starting on the first one."
~Mark Twain
Too often we stop ourselves from taking on a task because we're overwhelmed by the size of it. You won't ever achieve your task if you don't START. Part of developing an action plan to get to your goal is to break it into small pieces--preferably pieces you can do in 20 minutes or less.
When you do that, you can build momentum by accomplish A LOT of small tasks. Before you know it, you'll be half-way through your big task without realizing how you got there. (That's how I wrote my dissertation and every book or project I've ever done).
This week: Think about a task you've been postponing because it is overwhelming. Figure out how you can break it into tiny pieces that you can accomplish in 20 minutes or less. Think SMALL to accomplish something BIG. Begin to do those small tasks, one after the other, steadily. Do one each day. At the end of the week, notice how far you've come. Keep it up!

Self-Doubt Keeps You From Achieving Your Dreams

"Doubt whom you will, but never yourself."
~Christian Nevell Bovee
When you doubt yourself, you keep yourself from achieving your dreams. You tell your unconscious mind that you aren't completely sure you want the outcome about which you are dreaming. When you believe in yourself, you'll figure out how to accomplish it. Your mind will create the solutions. Self-doubt is a limiting belief that keeps you from having the life you want.
This week: If you find yourself doubting your ability to do something, change how you think about it. Instead of saying "I don't think I can do it," say "I'm not sure how I'm going to do it--yet." Consider working on letting go of this limiting belief. Be aware that getting rid of self-doubt won't make you arrogant, it will open the doors to lots of possibilities.
Linda Pucci, Ph.D. is a psychologist, life coach and trainer, specializing in helping people let go of the limiting beliefs that crush their success and sabotage their happiness. Living the Life You Imagine

"It's time to start living the life you've imagined."
~Henry James
Too often people postpone their dreams. They think they will do what they want when they retire, or when they get a little bit of money set aside. They allow the tasks of every day to get in the way of achieving their life they've imagined.
This week: Take time to imagine the life you would like to be living. What would you be doing? Who would you share this with? Now, figure out ONE SMALL THING you could do to bring you a little bit closer to the life you've imagined. Then DO IT. Do it now. Do it this week. It's time.
