When You Live Your Beliefs You Can Change the World

"Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around."

~Henry David Thoreau

As we start 2009, this quote captures my sentiments for the New Year. We all have the opportunity to turn the world around. In the U.S., we've seen what can happen when people are willing to get involved. My wish for 2009 is that all of us with begin to live what we believe, and in doing so, make our world a peaceful, healthy, prosperous place for all it's inhabitants.
This week: Spend some time at New Year's thinking about what just what you believe. How will you carry these beliefs into your daily life?

What Lies Within You Shines More Than Anything Else

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us."

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

While the events of our pasts have helped to shape us, and the accomplishments of our future will reflect upon us, it is what is inside us that really matters. How we express ur soul's purpose, how we express the uniqueness in us is what is most important.

This week: Amongst all the holiday stress and celebrations, notice if you are expressing what really lies within you. Are you sharing the love that resides inside you? The generosity? Are you expressing your connection to God and other people? Take some time to let what lies within you shine. I think you'll find it shines like that star over Bethlehem.

"Forgetting" a Memory Can Be Difficult

"Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it."

~Michel de Montaigne

When we "try to forget" something, we tend to cement it into our memory. Our brain must first identify what we are trying to forget. It first must think about it, picture it fully before giving the instruction to "forget it." The process of thinking about it helps to keep it active, and it seldom disappears. When we are trying to forget a memory, we usually want to get rid of the negative emotions attached to that memory. Releasing the emotional charge from a memory can most easily be done by changing our perceptions of it.

This week: Identify a memory about which you'd like to change your perceptions. Think about how you'd like to think about it differently. Think about what you've learned from it, especially the positive things you've learned from it. "I survived." "They didn't do it on purpose; they didn't know any better." What gift could this memory bring you?

The First Step to Getting the Most Out of Life

"The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this:

Decide what you want."

~Ben Stein

We sometimes forget that if we don't know where we are going, it will be tough to get there. In order to get the things you want from your life, you first must decide what you want. Once you've envisioned the outcome you are seeking, you can begin to put into place a plan to get there step-by-step.

This Week: Think about what you want to get out of your life. Decide what you want. Do you want it enough to work for it? If it is really something you want, are you ready to put together a plan to get there? This is the perfect time of year to be doing this type of planning!

Linda Pucci, Ph.D. is a psychologist, life coach and trainer at Inner Resouce Center, LLC. The Real Spirit of Giving

"Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege."

~John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

The real spirit of giving lies in thinking of it as a privilege rather than a duty. When you give from your heart, with love and gratitude, you capture the true spirit of giving.

This week: As you approach the holidays, remember that giving is not a duty. Notice what happens to the stress of holiday shopping when you remember that giving is a privilege. Express your love and gratitude through giving, and leave the sense of duty and "I have to" behind.
