You Haven't Failed--It Is Just Feedback

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

- Thomas Edison

Imagine where we would be today if Edison had believed he had failed when those 10,000 ways did not work.  We might still be reading by lamp light. The lesson here is profound.  When we think we have failed, we often give up.  But when we think about those failures as feedback about ways that didn't work, we keep on going, integrating that feedback into our next effort.  If you find yourself stopping yourself, believing you have failed, think about that "failure" as feedback.  Keep going.  Use the feedback to guide a new approach.

This week:  For just one week, think of your mistakes or failures as feedback.  When can you learn from the things that did not work?  How can you utilize that feedback to modify your approach?  How can you do it differently?  What do you need to add or subtract from your approach?  What might help you to be more successful next time?

Decide How You Are Going to Live Today to Create Your Outcomes

"How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I'm committed to?"

~Tony Robbins

This IS  the question, isn't it?  When you are really committed to create some particular outcome in your life, you need to DO something today to make it happen.  This sometimes involves taking action.  It sometimes means changing the way you are living.  If you are really committed, you will be willing to make these life changes.  This is "where the rubber meets the road."  Your outcome is connected to the way you choose to live today.

This week:  Think about the outcome you are committed to achieving.  What outcome do you really want?  Think about what life changes you will need to make to create that outcome.  If the goal is a great relationship, how will you need to act TODAY in order to create it?  If the outcome is living healthy, what lifestyle changes do you need to make TODAY in order to make that outcome real?  List all the things you are willing to do TODAY to create the outcome you are committed to achieving.  Choose ONE and DO IT!

Stem Your Stream of Worry Before It Overflows into Your Life

"Worry is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind.  If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained."

~Arthur Somers Roche

When we are worried, we are focused on the wrong thing.  Usually we are focused on the outcome we DON'T want to have happen.  We focus on these negative "what ifs" and help create that outcome by giving so much attention to it.  Our brains try to find us more of the things we think about.  If you are thinking about something, even if you don't want it to happen, your brain helps create it for you.  When you have more and more worry, you create neural pathways for it.  Eventually it impacts your other thoughts and turns you into "worrier" and you overflow your river banks with negative thinking.

This week: Ask yourself, "How much worrying do I do?"  Keep track of all the things you worry about for a full day.  Write them down.  Now assess them carefully.  Are they really things you need to worry about, or are you wasting your time and energy worrying about things that are a) unimportant or b) not likely to happen.  If you discover you have a problem with excessive worry, get some help with it.  There are many techniques and experts who can help you stem your stream of worry so that it no longer overflows into all areas of your life.

Change Your Beliefs to Change Your Destiny

"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds."

~Franklin D. Roosevelt

It is not our fate or life circumstances that limit us.  We are limited more by what we think and believe.  When we believe we are less than we could be, we limit our success and keep ourselves from living the life we could be living.  When you change your beliefs, you change your destiny.

This week:  Examine your beliefs.  What do you believe about yourself or your circumstances that keep you stuck?  What would you need to believe in order to empower yourself?  Challenge those limiting beliefs.  Are they really true?  Or have you just distorted events so that you can continue to believe them?  While you might feel safer limiting yourself, you won't be living the life you were really intended to live.  Write down the beliefs that need to change.  What empowering beliefs would serve you better?  Write them down.  Ask for help changing them if needed.

To Change the World, Change Yourself

"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."

~Leo Tolstoy

Many of us want to change the world, or at least change those around us.  What we often fail to realize is that when we look to ourselves and begin to change, those around us begin to change in response to the differences in us.

This week:  Change one small thing about yourself.  Change an attitude; change your response to someone; react differently than you usually do.  Do that for at least one full day.  Now notice how others change in response to the changes in us.  Consider making those changes permanent and enjoy the impact that has on those around us.  Imagine how the world would change if everyone changed one small thing...
