Are You a Pessimist or an Optimist?

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

~Winston Churchill

It all has to do with your perception.  Pessimists focus on what isn't working or won't work--all the difficulties.  An optimist focuses on opportunities and doesn't allow the difficulties to block them.  Which are you?  Which focus would help you move forward in your life?

This week:  Experiment with focusing on the opportunities in the obstacles that confront you.  It may seem artificial or contrived, but it will allow you to practice changing your focus.  Notice what the difficulties allow you to learn.  Assume, just for this week, that you can overcome any obstacle or difficulty that presents itself.  Sometimes that is enough to change the focus on the obstacle and find solutions.  Put your brain to work at solving the difficulty.  Your brain is exceptionally good at finding solutions when you get your pessimism out of the way.  At the end of the week, notice what your experience was like.  Can you build on it?

I love your exercises Linda. It seems this topic of seeing the opportunities in front of you are speaking to me from many different voices.

Thanks for bringing it to me again!

Thanks, Linda. I like to consider myself an optimist, but there are times I face an obstacle that seems too big to conquer. I like your suggestion to look for the opportunity. I like a challenge- finding solutions for problems. Great idea.

Boy ... I'd like to say that I've operated this year from a total optimistic base. But I can say this; that this year only turned properly when I was optimistic. Thanks for making me reflect on that Linda!

Great ideas, Linda! It is way too easy to get caught up the negative of an obstacle, and then it's a quick spiral downward if we don't stop it. When we look for the positives, and give ourselves some time to come up with an "out of the box" solution, we end up with the most successful outcomes.

All I can say is, things are a lot easier when you're optimistic. Through all situations there is a silver lining, you just have to believe there is and know you will see it some day...could be years, could be minutes.
