How Can You Get Your “What Ifs” to Drive Your Success?

Last week’s blog post focused on the idea that your ability to consider consequences—your “What If” thinking—could be positive or negative for you.

If you’re focused on all the things that could possibly go wrong, most likely, those “what ifs” will drive you to focus on negatives, maybe even potential catastrophes. When you’re focused on negative consequences, that’s what you may tend to create. Why? Because that’s where your focus is. The ideas that come to you will more likely have to do with negative outcomes, and when your focus is on negative things you don’t want to see happen, it’s a recipe for anxiety as well as being a recipe for attracting all that negativity and unfortunate outcomes.

While it may be fine to consider what might go wrong so that you can prepare for it and fix it, if your focus is only on what could go wrong, you most likely won’t have enough creative energy to dream about a big, successful outcome.

You see, both types of “what if” thinking are necessary for success. The awareness of what can go wrong is fine if it leads you to take steps to repair the weak areas in your plan. But maybe even more important is the ability to think “what if” in a positive direction.
Businesses that are successful, and people who are really successful allow themselves to consider “what if” to allow them to stretch and build something that maybe no one has thought of before.

Innovation depends upon examining positive “what ifs.” Thomas Edison considered what would happen if we could harness energy to light our homes. The Wright Brothers thought about creating a machine that humans could ride in what might fly from one place to another. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs used slightly different approaches to focus on the “what if” question of what if a computer didn’t have to take up a whole floor of a building?
The positive “what ifs” focus on possibilities. It allows people to invent things people have never seen before. It allows the creation of new approaches, new methods, new techniques, and entirely new fields and professions.

One of the “what if” questions I always ask myself when I want to stimulate thinking about positive “what ifs” is

“What would you do if you knew you could not fail?”

That approach lets you take any negative “what ifs” out of consideration and allows you to dream big. It allows you to consider possibilities that you might not have thought possible.
The idea with this question and with positive “what if” thinking is that it allows you to bypass your limitations, and by doing that, you’re able to dream bigger and stretch yourself more. Maybe you’ll consider doing something or creating something that you hadn’t thought possible because of your previous focus on the negative.

Imagining “what if” possibilities allows you to make choices and to uncover where your greatest passion lies. It allows you to let go of self-imposed limitations—like thinking “that can’t be done,” or “that would be impossible.” It allows you to imagine “what if it could be done?” That gets your mind working to problem-solve and to create new approaches and new ideas.

You’re able to harness your brain to work for you, instead of against you. When that happens there are no limits to where you can go and what you can accomplish.

When you think about harnessing your brain this way, does that make you feel empowered? Fearful? Overwhelmed? Cynical? Optimistic? If you need help exploring how this positive “what if” thinking might work in your life, I’d be happy to talk with you about it in a free half-hour phone call. During that call, I’ll work with you to figure out your next step. Email me at Linda@InnerResourceCenter.com or call me at 865-983-7544. Sometimes all it takes is having somebody to bounce an idea off of. I’ve been fortunate in my life to have people I could do that with, so I’m happy to serve that purpose for others. Because my “what if” is

“What if we all reached out to others who need or want a sounding board?

What if we encouraged each other to move forward?

What if we helped each other overcome limitations that block us?

What if we each used our unique abilities to help others succeed?

What could our world be like?”

Take the first step today to create what is possible. Let me help.

What Can You Do to Make the World Better?

Follow Your Passionate Heart

"We get by with a little help from our friends..."
John Lennon and Paul McCartney

I just got back from the three-day Inspired Fundraising Retreat 2017. To say it made an impact on me would be a gross understatement. Imagine yourself in a room of nearly 100 passionate people, each representing a small to medium-sized nonprofit. Each works with different missions and different types of clients. Some focus on helping people move beyond poverty. Some help children in the U.S. or other parts of the world. Some are faith-based. Some focus on veterans. Others focus on providing shelter and adoption for animals of all ages. Some help people learn job skills. Others focus on helping those with special needs. Some of the organizations represented were just getting started. Some had been in existence for many years.

It was a really diverse group of people and organizations. But they all had several things in common that became apparent almost immediately:

·       They all want to do good works in whatever arena they'd envisioned
·       They all are incredibly passionate and determined
·       They are all generous and cared about others (including each other)
·       They all have inspirational stories to tell about what their organization has done or is doing for their clients (humans and animals)
·       They all are determined to survive and thrive

Yes, this was a conference about fund-raising in nonprofit organizations, but it was about so much more. It awed me to see so many people who share their programs daily with their clients. People who are determined to improve some small part of our world. These are people making a difference.

Sandy Rees, a friend and colleague of mine from Get Fully Funded, put on this conference to share practical information and to give the participants opportunities to learn and practice what they learned.  They learned to improve and share everything from their "elevator speeches" about their organization, to how to take care of their donors, to how to increase their fund-raising so that they could do more good works. They learned how to plan their fund-raising, and how to evaluate its success. One organization won a $1000 grant from Sandy in a Shark Tank-like competition.

Another coach and I were there to help explain the concept of mindset and how important it is to success or failure. Most importantly, we were there to help them learn practical strategies for harnessing their mindset so that if they do have any mindset limitations getting in the way, they'd know how to do something about them.

I'll be following up with just about everybody I talked with, to help them begin the process of getting rid of the mindset limitations through a one-to-one phone call I offered anybody who was interested. For free. That's not because I'm so wonderful, but it's because I felt it was the least I could do. In the face of so much dedication, passion, and hard work, I want to help support these people and their organizations.

While you may not work in a nonprofit organization, I'll bet you give to causes you believe in. I only hope you understand just how very important your support is. No matter how much or how little you give, it makes a difference. A big difference. It may save someone's life. It may make someone's life a bit better. You contributions may be combined with others to keep supporting that organization's programs and clients. It will be put to good use. If you can't help financially, you can offer to volunteer your time. Nonprofits and their programs depend on the kindness of strangers as well as friends. What better way to go from being a stranger to becoming a friend?

In this world, which is so divided, supporting organizations that have the good of others in their mind and actions is a great way to do your small part to help a small corner of the world to heal. If we each do our part and join with others for the good of our world or small portion of it, we all can make a difference.

If you want to make a difference, but aren't sure what organization to donate your time or money to, feel free to contact me at Linda@InnerResourceCenter.com or call me at (865) 983-7544. We can talk about what types of causes you are most drawn to, and hopefully, I can help you figure out how you can make a difference.

Be Yourself

"You can't base your life on other people's expectations."

~Stevie Wonder

We've all done it at some point or another--tried to live our lives based on someone else's expectations.  Those people might have been our parents.  Or maybe our peers.  Or a significant other. Most of us have learned the hard way that basing your life on other people's expectations leaves you living someone else's life.  And, just like wearing someone else's shoes, it may not fit very well.  You life needs to be a reflection of you.  It needs to reflect what is important to you, what you are passionate about, what brings you joy (or sorrow).  Each of us is given a life to live, and we deserve to live it to the fullest.

This week: Take a hard look at how much you are living your life to fit someone else's expectations.  Are you compromising your values to get along? Are you ignoring things you like to do because someone else doesn't feel the same way?  Are you going along to get along?  Are you avoiding long overdue confrontations?  If so, make a decision to be more of yourself.  Do ONE SMALL THING to express something about yourself, regardless of whether or not others approve.

Find Passion in Your Career

"If you can't find passion for anything in your business you are in a wrong business - get out now!"

~Adam Urbanski

Life is too short to spend your time and energy working at something for which you feel no passion at all. You owe it to yourself, your customers or clients, and your employer (especially if your employer is you) to bring passion to your business.

This week: Ask yourself: What excites me about what I do for a living? What do I really enjoy about it? What special talent or product do I bring to the world? What do I want the world to know about what I do? How does what I do make a difference, even a small one, in the lives of others? If you are bored and jaded with your career, remember what it was that appealed to you about it in the first place. See if you can reconnect with the passion that you once felt. If not, ask yourself: "What DO I feel passionate about?" It may be time to redesign your career.

How to Live on Purpose

"The fruits of a fulfilling life—happiness, confidence, enthusiasm, purpose, and money—are mainly by-products of doing something we enjoy, with excellence, rather than things we can seek directly."

~Dan Miller

When you live with purpose, doing something that you are passionate about, enjoyment tends to follow. When you commit yourself to excellence--being the best you can be, using your skills and gifts fully, your life also takes on a fullness that is missing when you are just going through the motions.

This week: Do something you feel strongly about or that you enjoy. Notice whether the "fruits of a fulfilling life" accompany that. Do you feel happier? More confident? More enthusiastic? Did you feel more purposeful? Did you make money at it? If you felt even a little bit more fulfilled, you are on the right track.

Your Vision Reflects What Is In Your Heart

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.

~Carl Jung

Your vision is closely linked which who you REALLY are in your heart of hearts. Your vision needs to reflect your values--what is most important to you. You can only know this by connecting with the wise part of you, inside yourself. Too often we try to set our vision according to what someone else wants, whether it is a member of our family, close friend or even our target market. When you focus on what others want and make that your vision, you can lose the authenticity of that vision. The more the vision reflect what is inside YOU, the more it awakens your passion and becomes clearly expressed in everything you do.

This week: Spend some time connecting with YOUR vision. Look inside yourself and connect with that wise part of you that knows what is most important to you. As you think about your vision for your life or business, allow yourself to allow the passion you feel INSIDE to awaken and express itself. Capture it in words or pictures.

Living Your Life's Purpose Brings Happiness

"Many persons have a wrong idea about what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose."

~Helen Keller

When you discover and begin to live your life's true purpose, you discover that decisions are easier, life is more satisfying, and you can really create a happy life. When everything is congruent with your life's purpose, happiness follows.

This week: Begin to think about your life's true purpose. Consider where your passion lies. Connect with what is most important to you. What sort of mark would you like to make on the world if you could? Who would you want to help?

Living with Passion

"Passion is the Genesis of Genius"
~Anthony Robbins
Tony is absolutely right about this! Passion really ignites energy, and allows the creative process to take off. When you feel passion about something, it drives you forward. It feeds your soul. It drives you to step up and stretch yourself beyond what you thought might be possible. This energy, this drive, this passion, creates the kernel, the beginning seed of genius. When combined with ACTION, the genius in your plans can take off and really begin to make a difference.
This week: Use YOUR passion to begin to create the genius necessary. Start to make a difference about what is most important to you.
